The ancient sea-bed of the San Pablo Bay are mineral rich clay soils and define La Cruz Vineyard. Thirty-four acres are planted to Chardonnay. Typical to this vineyard is a pronounced bright acidity and signature spice notes. In 2019 we encountered higher than normal rainfall to begin the season and needed to make smart decisions during harvest as we dodged heat spikes, picking in the cool of night to steady the balance between sugars and acids. The backbone of Old Wente clones that make up this bottling are over 30 years old. With age comes less virility, but vines too become more refined over time. We hope you refer to the years passing with this same glass half full outlook, and while you're at it might as well make it a glass half full of La Cruz Chardonnay.
Pour this wine into a proper Burgundy glass if you can. This newly released and medium to full-bodied chardonnay will both benefit from opening and reward with a journey along the way. Young and primed, the aromatics delight with citrus, and baked goods on first whiff. Then honeysuckle and faint spice, with vanilla and golden toasted marshmallow scents too. A sip turns the citrus into lemon and orange marmalade, alongside sugar cookies and graham crackers. Crème fraîche and brioche join to smooth the texture and give longevity on the palette. At last, a mouth-watering and lasting finish with cool climate acidity prompting you for your next sip.
